The
scrum master
is the team role responsible for ensuring the team lives agile values and principles and follows the processes and practices that the team agreed they would use. The responsibilities of this role include:
clearing obstacles
establishing an environment where the team can be effective
addressing team dynamics
ensuring a good relationship between the team and product owner as well as others outside the team
protecting the team from outside interruptions and distractions.
The scrum master role was created as part of the scrum framework. The name was initially intended to indicate someone who is an expert at scrum and can therefore coach others.

The scrum master has many of the same responsibilities as the agile coach. In fact, i believe that if an organization had enough sufficiently knowledgeable and experienced scrum masters, the need for an agile coach would be significantly reduced, as scrum masters would be able to take on some coaching responsibilities. In many cases, however, new scrum masters tend to be transitioned project managers, so their experience is not always relevant to scrum and they need agile coaching. The scope of scrum masters is narrower than that of an agile coach, and their focus is usually directed at a single team.
Becoming the role of scrum master is a great steppingstone on your way to more senior agile positions. All you need to be a scrum master is to understand how developers work in your industry, the tools they use, and the ability to communicate effectively.
